The Trump supporter is thus making his announcement come true. He was in office for a good two years. His deputy temporarily takes over the post.
After a good two years in office, Richard Grenell resigned as US ambassador to Germany. His deputy, Robin Quinville, has temporarily taken on his post, as embassy spokesman Joseph Giordono-Scholz told the German Press Agency on Tuesday. Grenell already announced his resignation on Monday evening in Washington during a visit to US President Donald Trump and so did he communicated via Instagram.
The 53-year-old had previously resigned as the U.S. government’s executive intelligence coordinator last week after the Senate confirmed John Ratcliffe to the post.
What Grenell now intends to do is unclear. It is speculated that he could switch to Trump’s campaign team. Grenell is considered to be extremely loyal to Trump and always boasts good connections to the White House. He likes to send pictures with the President in the Twitter Air Force One or reports that he just called him on the phone.
As an ambassador in Berlin, Grenell saw it as his task to aggressively represent Trump’s policies in Germany and Europe – in an unconventional, rather undiplomatic way. In political Berlin, the man from Michigan made hardly any friends with his rabid manner. His best contact with the federal government is Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU). In contrast, his office was not particularly well received in the Federal Foreign Office and the Chancellery. There were even occasional demands from the opposition to declare him an “unwanted person” and to quasi identify him.
