The authorities of the Republic of Belarus have arrested dozens of Russian mercenaries accused of attempting to destabilize them in the run-up to the elections
The latest news from the Republic of Belarus raises the suspicion of a classic intelligence operation, such as the infamous US intelligence agency CIA has repeatedly done in unpleasant countries Regime change organized. This was last in Bolivia and Venezuela the case.
Only it concerns the end of July arrested suspected mercenarieswho have nothing less than terrorism is accused of Russian citizens who are supposed to act on behalf of the private, Kremlin-based mercenary company Wagner.
Belarusian security circles said the 33 suspected mercenaries had been assigned to terrorize the country in the run-up to the upcoming elections to destabilize. A total of more than 200 Wagner mercenaries are said to have infiltrated the Republic of Belarus with this order.
Broadcast on Belarusian television Access video recordings The Belarusian special units showed not only the arrest of the suspected Wagner mercenaries in a hotel near Minsk, but also cash, foreign exchange, passports, smartphones, military training material and badges with the inscription “Death is our business and business is going well”.
According to the Belarusian news agency Belta, the men immediately Attracted attention, since they behaved “uncharacteristically for Russian tourists”: they had worn military clothing and had not consumed alcohol.
The access was through the Belarusian secret service, the KGB, as well as the Anti-terrorist group Alpha the Belarusian police. Belarusian authorities publicly stated that the detainees were Wagner mercenaries, although the whereabouts of the remaining alleged subversives remained unclear.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko asked the Russian government to explain what was going on at a hastily scheduled cabinet emergency meeting. The Ambassador of the Russian Federation has been summoned to Minsk after some of those arrested are said to have been tasked with starting a “revolution” in Belarus.
However, an official statement by the Kremlin stated that the Russian government no clues of criminal activity among the arrested men. Moscow is expecting a “detailed statement” from the Belarusian authorities regarding the arrest. The Russian Ministry of Defense described the accusations from Minsk as “hideous” and demanded immediate access to the arrested Russian citizens.
The Russian embassy in Minsk also said that while the detainees were members of a “private security company”, they were only “in transit” in Belarus as they were supposed to travel via Istanbul to a third, unspecified country. The group only missed their flight and therefore had to extend their stay in Belarus.
The Belarusian security forces, however, see a clear connection between the presidential election on August 9 and the appearance of the alleged Wagner people in front of Minsk.
According to the US broadcaster Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty Belarusian security forces see links between Russian mercenary activities and opposition candidates in the current presidential campaign – particularly the successful Svyatlana Zichanouskaja campaign, which has mobilized tens of thousands of followers in Minsk in the face of growing economic problems. Zichanouskaja is actually leading her husband’s campaign after he was arrested in late May.
The increasing tensions between Moscow and Minsk were already apparent in June after the Belarusian leadership accused the Kremlin of wanting to organize a “colorful revolution” in Belarus in the style of the West. Gazprom banker Victor Babariko, who is believed to be close to the Kremlin in the Belarusian presidential election campaign, had to leave the race for the highest state office after initiating proceedings for money laundering and fraud prevention.
Should the Belarusian allegations be substantiated, the Kremlin would be de facto within a few weeks from the planning of a “soft” overthrow, such as that from the West in the “Orange Revolution” Ukraine practiced was switched to tangible CIA methods of military destabilization. In the end, like western war companies, Wagner is only an expression of the tendency to privatize the war of intervention.
In fact, the Wagner Group acts as a counterpart to the mercenary armies in the privatized environment of western military machinery, which often do the “dirty work” of interventions and military adventures in the periphery of the world system. For government agencies, the use of such “private security companies” has the advantage that their losses and war crimes are not directly linked to the country concerned. Notorious is the now defunct American killer group “Blackwater”, which is in Iraq downright massacre committed on the civilian population.
The Wagner mercenaries again came to Syria (e.g. at the Battle for Khasham in February 2018), in Libya (on the Side of Haftars) and used in several countries in Africa. Video recordings from Syria published in 2019, on which Wagner men allegedly claimed to be a Syrian deserter, made it clear that the methods of Russian mercenaries do not differ greatly from those of their American colleagues torture to death in a bestial manner
