Despite Corona: Greens praise mass meetings
Restaurateurs, who themselves suffer from strict corona requirements, rub their eyes: Despite the mass violations of the distance requirement, demonstrators are praised by sections of politics at the anti-racism general meetings. Is that right? A comment by Merkur editor-in-chief Georg Anastasiadis.
Whether the German anti-racism demos in the time of Corona are “bottomless recklessness”, as the SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach complains, or a pleasing and “overdue” democratic signal, as Greens leader Annalena Baerbock praises, in two Perhaps know better weeks – when the infection numbers skyrocket (or not) as a result of the fray. But the contradictions in which the green defenders get caught up in the mass demonstrations that go beyond all specifications are already obvious: Is it right and justifiable, with the commitment to the rights of dark-skinned citizens, the rights of another group, namely those of older people who are at risk of health, to risk? And can there be a first and second class right to demonstrate, depending on whether the protest is against racism – or against the applicable corona rules?
Many citizens are already becoming restless – for example the restaurateurs, who ask about the proportionality of the restrictions imposed on them, while at the same time large demonstrations are approved. And what may be going on in the minds of the police officers who are trying in vain to enforce distance rules at the mass meetings? They protect – while accepting their own health risks – the right to demonstrate for those who are often quickly at hand with the accusation that the German police are “latently racist”.
Anyone who campaigns against racism as a young person generally follows a justice reflex that is only to be welcomed. But politicians should not follow their reflexes, but rules that they set up themselves and that should apply to everyone.
