Media dramatize increase in new infections – Altmaier threatens higher penalties for wrongdoing – 17,000 demonstrate against corona policy in Berlin
Minister of Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier is worried. Entrepreneurs and business associations fear nothing more than a new shutdown. The fear word is going around again, the numbers of newly infected people are increasing, but you should have learned to deal with it more calmly in recent weeks?
The much-vaunted recklessness moves Altmaier’s concern and, as is customary for educators and politicians in the face of unreasonable behavior, he praises some – “The vast majority of the population continues to behave extremely responsibly”, the dpa quotes him – and threatens the others with fines:
What we are currently experiencing in terms of risk increases is largely due to the careless and sometimes irresponsible misconduct of a very small number of people. (…) We have to prevent this more effectively than before and act effectively in cases where there are infections and outbreaks: This includes fines and penalties if it is a matter of intent or gross negligence.
Those who deliberately endanger others have to expect “serious consequences”, said the Minister of Economic Affairs, who fears that the economic upswing that is just beginning would be endangered. A renewed increase in infections should not be tolerated. He specified facts: “Anyone who drives a bus or train without a mask is not endangering themselves, but others.” Or: “If a party in a narrow cellar pub becomes a super-spreading event in violation of all distance and hygiene regulations …”
That is not trivial and must be punished “if necessary”, he continues. Altmaier gave no guidance as to how high he would set the penalties. He apparently hopes that the threat alone is enough power word. When it comes to their wallets, the citizens are startled, was previously a political wisdom.
Be behind his threat Fears from the economythat the government could once again take measures to exacerbate the crisis. The basis of his threat is the increasing number of infections.
955 new corona infections reports the RKI today August 1st (0:00), on Friday that number was 870. The RKI fears a “trend reversal”, as RKI boss Lothar Wieler recently said (A second wave or a single big wave? As a reason Negligence in complying with the so-called AHA rules (Distance, hygiene, everyday masks).
One aspect is that numbers of new infections approaching the 1000 mark have an effect. But for a few weeks now, the RKI has drawn up a different framework and set up a different focus in order to be able to assess the risk, namely the so-called 7-day incidence. The requirement is that if this number is higher than 50 per 100,000, then there is cause for concern and action.
According to the RKI, this indicator is available on August 1 5.1. It does not have double digits in any of the federal states. Nevertheless, the media are full of Disaster alerts; Whether that is prophetic foresight or simply the generation of readers, a business with fear, everyone can decide for themselves.
The crowd in Berlin is said to have grown to 15,000 participants on Saturday afternoon around 3:00 p.m., demonstrating there against the “corona policy” of the federal government. By the evening, many more participants are expected to raise awareness of their freedoms, often without complying with the AHA rules. (Indeed it was said around 3 p.m.that the “elevator that moved from Unter den Linden towards Brandenburg Gate” was ended by the organizer. According to the Berlin Tagesspiegel “but the protest continues”).
Observers of the daily mirror report of a mixture of celebration and demonstration, the Love Parade is used as a reference. There is cause for nervousness that right-wing and right-wing groups want to make political capital out of the criticism of the measures – and that participants show signs of paranoia and a distorted view of reality. Big summer theater in Berlin?
Not in terms of criticism. Some recent court rulings confirmed that government measures were disproportionate and that reason was not on their side like that Süddeutsche Zeitung reports. This can be seen on a small scale:
The Bavarian Administrative Court also suspended the Corona curfew in Bavaria in June. The judges did not understand why one should be infected after 10 p.m. in the tavern rather than before 10 p.m. Lawyer Alexander Lang, whose Würzburg law firm had sued against the curfew, said that similar arguments could be used to counter the ongoing closure of pubs and bars in Bavaria. It is not obvious that you get infected while drinking rather than eating.
And that, if you have the big principle in mind, namely that the Basic Law for freedom as a rule and restriction as an exception stands for the insight “that the calculated risk is ultimately the central category for dealing with Corona” .
