The medical officers do not see the health authorities in Germany prepared for a second corona wave. “For a second pandemic wave, the health offices are far too scarce,” said Ute Teichert, head of the Federal Association of Doctors of Public Health, to the newspapers of the Funke media group. “With the increasing number of infections, we are facing a huge problem.”

The health authorities could not wait until the planned measures by the federal government to strengthen the public health service came into force. “We need a short-term solution. We need to know where health departments can get reinforcements in an emergency.” Specifically, she spoke in favor of a nationwide register of volunteers – a kind of job exchange that, in an emergency, places employees who have already been trained.

Highest number of new infections since mid-May

It is the highest number in weeks: According to the Robert Koch Institute, the health authorities in Germany reported 902 new corona infections within one day minus the time delay. That is the highest number since May – apart from the local Corona outbreak at the meat manufacturer Tönnies in June. Since the beginning of the Corona crisis, at least 207 828 people in Germany have been shown to be infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus, as the RKI reported on the Internet on Thursday afternoon.

The number of registered new infections of 902 also means a peak for the end of July. The RKI had previously feared a trend reversal in Germany due to the increased numbers.

Berlin introduces mandatory masks in schools

The federal state of Berlin introduces a mask requirement in schools in the fight against the corona virus. The regulation should apply to schoolchildren, teachers and other employees in school buildings in a week’s time, according to SPD education senator Sandra Scheeres. You have to wear mouth-nose protection, for example in hallways, in common and common rooms or on the toilet. This obligation should not apply in classrooms, on the school playground or in the after-school care center. Schools in Berlin will start again on August 10th.

Berlin is a kind of a pioneer with the mandatory mask, which the Senate has yet to formally adopt next Tuesday. Similar regulations are planned in several other federal states. In many cases, however, it is still unclear whether and to what extent the mask should be mandatory. In some countries, such as NRW, there is talk of voluntary mask requirements, or – like in Hesse or Saxony – it is at the discretion of the schools. Berlin’s neighboring state Brandenburg is currently not planning to wear a mask. In Baden-Württemberg, however, wearing a nose and throat protection after the summer holidays should become compulsory, as in the capital.

According to the will of the red-red-green Berlin Senate, schools in the new school year should largely work in regular operation again despite the corona crisis – i.e. with face-to-face classes and without a minimum distance due to the large number of students in the premises. Exceptions apply to students with previous illnesses.

According to the education administration, the obligation to wear mouth-nose protection applies in principle to all types of school. There will be exceptions for special schools where disabled people learn. It is still unclear whether masks will be kept at schools for students who do not have them or have forgotten them. Talks are also planned, it said. The mandatory mask is now a building block in Berlin to improve protection against infection with the virus. It is also planned, for example, to train class associations all day in the same room in order to avoid meeting other students.

Court stops entry ban for Bavaria vacationers from risky areas

People from German corona hotspots can also go on holiday in Bavaria again. The Bavarian Administrative Court has temporarily overturned the ban on accommodation for people from domestic risk areas. It was not proportionate that more than 50 new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants of a district automatically led to a ban on accommodation within seven days, the court ruled on Tuesday in Munich. In addition, the regulation did not refer to publications by the Robert Koch Institute – it was not clear to the innkeepers where they found the current figures.

The state government issued the ban on accommodation on June 23. In doing so, she reacted to the massive infection in the Tönnies meat factories in Gütersloh, among others. A hotelier from Upper Palatinate had sued. He also wanted to limit the number of private events and meetings and congresses. However, the Bavarian Administrative Court rejected this application, as he did on Tuesday in a message explained.

The Federal Foreign Office does not recommend traveling to Spanish holiday regions

Because of the sharp rise in corona infections in Spain, the Federal Foreign Office is now advising against tourist trips to several regions of the most popular holiday destination for Germans. Catalonia is affected with the tourist metropolis Barcelona and the beaches of the Costa Brava, as well as the Aragón and Navarra regions in the west of it. The Balearic Islands with the popular holiday island of Mallorca or the Canaries are spared.

The Federal Foreign Office justified the step in its travel advice for Spain with the “high infection rates and local barriers”. The ministry initially refused to reactivate the formal travel warning for the heavily affected regions. Such a move would have allowed vacationers to cancel bookings free of charge. The advising against traveling is almost an alarm level below.

The Federal Foreign Office did not lift the travel warning for Spain, which was hit particularly hard by the corona pandemic, until June 21 after the government ended a 14-week emergency. Infection numbers have increased dramatically in some areas in recent days. The federal government does not initially count the three most affected regions as risk areas, despite the high number of infections. Returnees from such areas will have to take a corona test in Germany in the future. In the European Union, this currently only applies to Luxembourg.

The Catalan health authority announced on Monday evening that 724 new infections had been registered in the past 24 hours. Regional President Quim Torra called for extreme caution. “The situation is very critical,” he said. The next ten days are “the most important of this summer”. You are almost back in a situation like in March. If the numbers continued to rise, more drastic measures would have to be taken. Exit restrictions would then no longer be excluded. With more than 270,000 infections and over 28,400 deaths, Spain is one of the countries most affected by the pandemic in Europe.
